A rusted white and yellow boat lists against a taut anchor chain, its keel balancing upon the mud flats of Morecambe Bay: this sediment stands revealed by the twice-daily lowered tidal waters and stretches across to Ulverston on the opposite hillside in Cumbria.

When I snapped this photo of the old warehouse building on the River Lune quay in Lancaster, as the Sun was setting (before the building’s recent redeveloping) I didn’t see anything unusual. However, as I adjusted the RAW file in Photoshop, there in the bare top-left window I suddenly spotted a small head popping up into view!
Who this youngster is I’m sure will always remain a mystery, but they will be around six years older than when they were accidently caught in this picture…

A sure sign that Spring is in full-flow across the UK is the timely arrival of our native English Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), bursting from the sheltered undergrowth and foliage cover everywhere and carpeting their purple-lilac spread as far as the eye can see within the green.

A cargo ship laden with machinery glides along the River Lune’s estuary towards the open sea: on this side of the camera is Glasson Dock and on the bank facing is Sunderland Point, with the wind turbines and pylons of the National Grid at Heysham piercing the tranquil sky.

A Grey Heron stands rigid in a field next to the Glasson Spur on the Lancaster Canal, drying off in the Sunshine before another fishing trip means striding back into the cold shallows once more.
