Raven’s gift

High above Hawthornthwaite Fell in the Forest of Bowland, soaring on the mid-day thermals was spotted this Raven, clutching a ‘gift’ for its mate in its beak. On closer examination though I cannot discern what this gift actually is: could it possibly be a section of a gorse or heather root? Perhaps it’s a snaffled half-a-sausage from some day-trippers’ lunches up on the moors? Or could it even be a snapped-off piece from Britain’s only poisonous snake, the Adder?

It’s definitely an avian mystery for sure…
